Denny Taylor: Family literacy: Young children learning to read and write

I found that the group presentation on Denny Taylor's book Family literacy: Young children learning to read and write to be very informative. They discussed some great tips for supporting literacy at home which comes at a perfect time now with the summer months just beginning and the school year ending. Here are some of the tips that I found to be most helpful for families to promote literacy development:

- Read stories daily

- Point out words in books

- Read the newspaper daily

- Write notes or communicate to eachother when information can not be delivered directly

- Watch Sesame Street

- Look up television shows in a TV guide with the child

- Modeling reading (showing how to turn pages)

- Write grocery lists together

- Subscribe to a children's magazine

- Allow younger children to listen to stories that are being told to the older children
